SBL- April 7,2022
The Super Boxing League announced today plans to launch a team boxing league, the first of its kind, in North America in 2023. The League will be the first pro sports league to have both genders competing in the same games as part of the same team. The league will be the first professional team league to have franchises located in the Unites States, Mexico and Canada. “We are excited to bring the action packed excitement of team boxing to North America.” Said Amir Khan, Chairman of SBL.” We believe that the sport of boxing is ripe for innovation and spectators will embrace our team concept”
The initial franchises are the New York City Attitude, the Brooklyn Brawlers, the Los Angeles Terminators, the San Francisco Hammers, the Dallas Carnage, the Houston Hitmen, the Detroit Venom, the Chicago Gladiators, the Toronto Rampage, the Mexico City Conquistadors, the Atlanta A’s, the Las Vegas Sinners, the Boston Butchers, the Philadelphia Smokers, the DC Rebels, and the Miami Assassins. Initial matches will take place over a 3 month period nightly in Las Vegas. The first two seasons will take place in Las Vegas and the teams will be returning to their home arenas to compete in season three. Each team will have 18 active fighters and six backup fighters. The CEO of Super Boxing League, Bill Dosanjh remarked “We are excited about the opportunity that will be afforded young fighters who previously may have not succeeded because of lack of opportunity. The growing divide between the haves and have nots in the boxing world is disappointing and SBL launch in North America will help correct this inequity. No aspiring fighter should fail because of lack of opportunity.”
The regular season will be followed by a playoff season that will feature six qualifying teams appearing in two preliminary round bouts and two semifinal matches. The top two teams will receive a bye for the preliminary bouts and the playoffs will culminate with the championship match. Superfight 1, History in the Making will take place on Sunday night of Labor Day Weekend. Super Boxing League anticipates adding eight new franchises for its third season including potentially being the first North American league sport to expand to Europe. “The breadth of interest in boxing around the world will allow us to build a diverse fan base across all races, ethnicities, and genders while at the same time crossing geographical barriers”, said Ahmed Sheikh co-founder of SBL North America. “ At this juncture in history with so many forces dividing people, it is more important than ever to bring the world together through sport. “
SBL uses a proprietary point system whereby each match produces points based on a draw, decision, knockdowns, and knockouts. Points generated from each individual bout are added to the team total. The point system is currently being tinkered with in advance of North American launch with full details to be unveiled in the coming months.
